Vesak in Kandy, May 13, 2006 - 1

At 7 PM, Krishantha, a tuk-tuk driver, picked us up. For the next five hours we rode around Kandy and Peradeniya. Some of these are lanterns, made of various materials, both processed and natural. Others are "pandals," lighted boards (some with 3-d images) depicting a Buddhist story. The very large ones have numbered panels. For these, the story was being played on loudspeakers. Many people, including whole famiilies, stood in the dark, looking at the the pictures and following with the recording. (Click on the image to see it larger.)
